The Position

At Roche, 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare.

We believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) is a global function within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED). The intern position will support a joint project between Predictive Modeling and Data Analytics (PMDA) chapter and Translational Safety Assessment.

Predictive models are largely used during early stages of drug development as they can lead towards selection of only desirable features during early drug design as well as improve early candidate selection and provide indications of possible safety concerns. A number of predictive models are being used within Roche but there is no central repository where one can check what is available and apply models in a fast and robust way. Direct consequences are reduced opportunities for the end users as they will fail to apply the models and facilitate their daily work as well as to reduce costs (time, money, animal lives etc). The modelers are also affected as they fail to receive feedback on their models, to improve and develop further, to prioritize modeling requests based on what is already available. In brief, there is a reduced use of models due to lack of knowledge of their existence.

We are seeking an intern pursuing a master’s or PhD degree with expertise in toxicology and computer science to help us organize and develop an “inventory” that captures all models (commercial as well as in-house) being used within Roche to support safety assessment. We will aim for a dedicated website where all models will be made available and easily accessible. The models will be organized by applicability domain and fully characterized (e.g. ML methodology (e.g. support vector machine, decision tree etc, type of input data (e.g. type of in vitro assay, molecular descriptors etc), validation approaches and model performances (e.g. Accuracy, Sensitivity), information on usage (e.g. number of active users etc), feedback field (e.g. Leave a comment field ), information on contact person, intended users etc.).

In this position you will:

  • Support the collection and organization of information on modeling tools used and/or developed within Roche for the purpose of safety assessment

  • Propose an website architecture supporting access of the models via a dedicated internal website

  • Integrate the models into an internal dedicated website

  • Integrate visualization tools to facilitate usage across pRED

  • Support the testing of the models and their promotion within Roche’s communities

Qualifications Required:

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master’s program or have completed your (Master or Bachelor) studies a maximum of 12 months ago in bioinformatics or related discipline (e.g. computer science, biomedicine, biological sciences, biostatistics).

You have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Strong knowledge in toxicology

  • Strong programming skills in Python

  • Good data engineering, visualization, and interpretation skills.

  • Familiarity with website and database development and architecture skills

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.
